"everyone being equal" works if you have a small team of very experienced people, but that's not how most real-world software teams work. Certainly the ones that I've seen and worked within, anyway. I know that certification is a double-edged sword, but perhaps the software industry does need some sort of regulation, standard certification or apprenticeship model in place so that we can at least set a minimum bar (like other industries). Pirates of the code sea... ;-)
