Software Architecture for Developers

What it takes to be an architect?

More good discussion on this seemingly simple question happening over at What it takes to be an architect? in the Architect Certification (SCEA) forum at JavaRanch.

Purpose of this thread
  1. To present, based on MY limited experience, what architects did on the projects (J2EE) I worked on -apart from architecting/designing a solution - and to take input from the members of this forum about their own experience.
  2. Obtain information on relevant resources informative and/or interactive URLs e.g. java.sun.com /discussion groups etc, presentations those are very useful for an architect in terms of new technologies, approaches, strategies etc.
  3. To obtain suggestions from the knowledgeable people of this forum as to how one can systematically transition/mature from say a programmer/developer to an architect and the type of activities that one should constantly perform to stay as a good architect.

Along with some good discussion on topics like the use of EJB, who does estimating, etc are some useful links that I'll be taking a look at over the coming days.
